Variety has announced that The Lion King was the big winner at the April 28 Moliere Awards — the French equivalent of the Tony accolades.
At the Folies Bergere, Le Roi Lion picked up three trophies.
These were for Best Musical, Lighting (Donald Holder) and costumes (Julie Taymor, who also directed).
The show opened at the lavishly renovated Theatre Mogador, Paris, on October 4, 2007. The musical, featuring songs by Elton and Tim Rice, is performed in French. Lyrics and dialogue have been adapted by Stéphane Laporte, who earned a Molière nomination for his work on the French adaptation of Fiddler on The Roof two seasons ago. Stage Entertainment France, a subsidiary of Stage Entertainment, is the producer.
Originally opened at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre November 13, 1997, The LionKing has become an international smash with productions playing all around the globe.
Le Roi Lion offers performances Tuesday-Friday evenings at 8 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 3 and 8 p.m.
Tickets, priced €25-€99, are available by calling 338 20 88 87 86.
