Summer Tour Planned; First Dibs Tomorrow

Thursday 27 October 2005 @ 17:57 - GMT

Pop legend Sir Elton will play Oxford's Kassam Stadium on his tour next summer, the Oxford Mail revealed on October 27, 2005.

In a message to Oxford Mail readers, the luminary said: "As football is one of the great passions of my life, I have always loved playing concerts in stadiums, so getting to play at Oxford United FC will be a chance once again for me to soak up the atmosphere that is unique to this country in its football stadiums.

"I am looking forward to seeing you all in Oxford."

The songster is expected to sell out the 20,000 tickets for the June 24 gig--which go on sale at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

The gig will see the knight perform two hours of hits as part of his Summer in the City tour 2006.

Ben Martin, of promoters Marshall Arts, said: "This is the first date of the summer tour to be announced. We are still in the midst of negotiating with other venues -- Oxford is the first."

The venue ''has been keen to have an artist like Sir Elton perform there -- and they don't come much bigger than him,'' added Ben. ''He has real universal appeal. Over the last few years, he has tended to go to play to the people, rather than people coming to see him.

"Sir Elton will be performing two hours of hits across his whole back catalogue -- that's three decades of incredible tracks. The tour this summer of places such as Reading, Southampton, Swindon and Norwich was a considerable success and it's on the back of this that he decided to do next summer's tour.

"They are places where you would not usually expect to see an artist of his standing but he likes to play lots of different types of shows."

John Angus, operations director at the stadium, said: "This is fantastic news -- it's really, really exciting. We are absolutely over the moon.''

Tickets will cost between £35 and £60, with a number of premium tickets and hospitality packages available.
