EJW readers may recall that a rock band being promoted by former Eurythmics star Dave Stewart is not all that it seems.

The Sunderland-born guitarist has been strumming up interest in the group, Platinum Weird, in the build up to the release of an album next month.

Stewart claims the band was formed in 1973 and that its debut gig took place the following year at Mick Jagger's birthday party. Also in 1974, Platinum Weird was said to have been signed by Elton's Rocket Records label.

Much of the focus has been on Stewart's alleged lover and songwriting partner, Erin Grace, who mysteriously disappeared. VH1's Rock Legends featured a mock rockumentary earlier this year about this, during which Elton and other notables were interviewed.

But the band's "history" is an elaborate fiction . . . a marketing ploy ahead of the release of Make Believe on October 10 in the U.S. through Universal's imprint Interscope.

The UK release will be through Universals Weapons of Mass Entertainment label, on October 16th.

Stewart has also announced he is putting the old band back together. In 2004, he wrote songs for the Pussycat Dolls (who joined Elton onstage at Fashion Rocks) with Los Angeles songwriter Kara DioGuardi. She will be the new voice of Platinum Weird.

Their self-titled album will be out in the early part of 2007.
