Friday 16 January 2009 @ 17:12 - GMT

The owner of an independent book store, cherished by notables such as Elton, died earlier this month.

Glenn Goldman, who founded Book Soup in 1975, died from pancreas cancer just one day after announcing plans to sell his Sunset Boulevard bookstore. He was 58.

With over 60,000 books filling the store from floor to ceiling, Book Soup became a favourite haunt of Los Angeles locals as well as a must-see pit stop for visitors.

Besides Elton, other well-known fans included Shaquille ONeal, Viggo MortensenAnnie Leibovitz and Paris Hilton.

Goldman was a past president of the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association and had served on the Board of Directors of the American Booksellers Association.

"Glenn was not only a friend and mentor to his fellow booksellers," said ABA President Gayle Shanks of Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, Arizona, "he was also beloved by his sales reps, many of whom worked for him at one time and were there with him during the last hours of his life."

Glenn is survived by his sons, Joe and Sam.

Everyone who knew Glenn or who appreciated his business is welcome to stop at the store this evening at 7 p.m. to remember him.
