On Wednesday, a folk musician who was admired by the likes of Elton, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and the Beatles, died of lung cancer.

Bert Jansch was 67.

The Scotsman was a founding member of the band Pentangle, and later a solo act.

Although the singer-songwriter tended to avoid attention, he did attend the BBC Folk Awards to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, returning in 2007 to get a similar accolade with Pentangle. He also got a Merit prize at the 2006 Mojo Awards, where Elton mentioned that and he and Bernie Taupin used to listen to Bert's albums.

I dont care what the world thinks of me, the performer said in a recent interview. Im not one for showing off, but I guess my guitar playing sticks out.

Jansch was married three times, and is survived by his wife Loren Auerbach and two sons.
