The Guardian reveals that Elton has helped Steven Davies, even taking him on tour when the cricketer was feeling low.
Two years ago, the Surrey and England wicketkeeper became the first international player to come out as gay. He's also the latest sportsman to talk publicly about depression, which led to him being "rested" from the Surrey side last year. But Elton has been supportive.
"When I came out, he sent champagne to congratulate me and we bonded," says Davies. "He's looked after me in many ways. He knew I was going through a hard time and I mentioned I was taking some time away from cricket. He said winters in England can be a bit depressing and asked: 'Why don't you come on tour with me?' So I did. I had a great time."
The 26-year-old is the latest in a long line of Elton interventions. For instance, Robbie Williams has admitted that he has the piano player to thank for getting through his drink and drug issues.
Eminem, who had a prescription painkiller habit, called Elton, ''because he's in the business and relates to the lifestyle.''
And Ryan Adams called Elton ''a shaman, sorcerer, the good wizard'' after the composer counselled him about addiction.
"He came out of the clouds and checked in on me," Ryan said.
