Ignored by the recording industry's Grammy Awards, the Spice Girls got a measure of satisfaction Monday at the American Music Awards, reported Associated Press January 28, 1998.
The British quintet dominated the pop-rock category, winning best band, favorite new artist and best album ("Spice").
The American Music Awards are determined by a national poll of about 20,000 record buyers. Nancy Sinatra accepted the special Award of Merit for her 82-year-old father, Frank. "When I left the house, Dad said, `Give all the fans a hug for me, because they made me possible,' " she said.
"So consider yourself hugged by the Chairman of the Board."
POP-ROCK: Babyface, Celine Dion.
SOUL-RHYTHM & BLUES: Babyface, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Eryhak Badu (new artist), and "Share My World" by Mary J. Blige.
