Elton is to be a leading member of a British government think-tank aimed at boosting the country's music talent.
The new initiative, the Youth Music Trust, aims to develop the musical skills of young people, and was launched June 24, 1998.
It will be funded with £10 million a year from the U.K.'s National Lottery, plus hoped-for donations from musical charities and companies involved in the music business.
The trust is designed to reverse the decline in musical instrument and choral teaching in schools, especially for children aged between seven and 14. Among other luminaries on the Trust will include distinguished classical musicians and scholars, plus Mick Hucknell of Simply Red.
