Celebrities come to see Elton at Shepherd's Bush

Tuesday 17 December 2002 @ 7:55 - GMT

There were no Fools In Fashion nor pub ditties like Down at the Old Bull and Bush, when Elton performed at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London on December 16, 2002.

The stars came out to play too.

Our photographer spotted singer Lulu rushing in fast, as did Pet Shop Boys' Chris Tennent and Cat Deeley.

But most celebrities were happy to pose for photos and TV interviews.

As fans waited in the wet winter weather, the celebrities kept on coming. Liz Hurley and Elton's partner David Furnish were already inside the venue where Elton arrived early for sound checks.

Others said to be there included Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Anna Friel. Misteeq, Ralph Little, One True Voice, Sophie Anderton, Matthew Williamson, Elton's favourite artist and muriel designer Sam Taylor Wood, Mark Owen, and Jay Jopling.

It was not surprising to see fashion designers such as , Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood, since this was no ordinary show. It was an Elton John AIDS Foundation benefit concert presented by M.A.C. AIDS Fund and M.A.C. Cosmetics.

Elton was signed up by M.A.C. in spring 2002 to act as spokesman for the cosmetics group's AIDS Fund Viva Glam IV campaign along with singer Mary J. Blige and Shirley Manson of the band Garbage.

The Fund has already raised more than £16 million for AIDS and HIV sufferers.

Other celebs spotted and caught on film were: Denise Van Outen, Harvey from So Solid Crew, Vivienne Westwood, EJAF's Robert Key, Jackie from Atomic Kittens, Lulu, model Nell, funnyman and chat show host Frank Skinner, and BBC Eastenders actress Michelle Collins.

According to the organisers, Elton played a very intimate date at the Shepherds Bush Empire. West London welcomed Elton back for the first time since December 1980, when his previous performances at the former Hammersmith Odeon left audiences in awe.

Celebrity friends included Elizabeth Hurley, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Anna Friel, Lulu, Denise Van Outen, Joely Richardson, Martine McCutcheon, Neil Tennant, Cat Deeley, Ralph Little, Bond, Nick Moran, MC Harvey, Sophie Anderton, Sam Taylor Wood, Jay Jopling, Matthew Williamson, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. Songs performed included I'm Still Standing and Crocodile Rock.

Every single penny of the £11.00 retail price of the four VIVA GLAM lipsticks goes directly to people in need suffering with AIDS.

President of M.A.C, John Demsey, said: "We began the partnership with the Elton John AIDS Foundation one year ago and it has served to increase our strength in raising funds and awareness of this pandemic."

The Elton John AIDS Foundation, which was founded in 1992, is one of the most prominent non-profit AIDS organisations which funds prevention education and direct patient care services worldwide.

The Foundation has to date raised £19 million. The collaboration of the Elton John AIDS foundation and the M.A.C AIDS Fund will help more than 40 million people affected by the global epidemic.

Elton said: "I am delighted to be working with M.A.C on the promotion of the Viva Glam Lipstick. It's fantastic that the company is doing so much for people affected by HIV and AIDS via proceeds from the lipstick, their own M.A.C AIDS Fund and by partnering my own AIDS Foundation to support our work through its generous sponsorship of events like tonight's concert."

Elton also reportedly said a few other things during the show, according to tip offs from fans.

After The Ballad Of The Boy In The Red Shoes Elton, as on numerous occasions, attacked the U.S. Ronald Reagan administration.

"Reagan did fuck all for people with AIDS. He's a number one arsehole."

He kept up his anti-Republican views, adding in a swipe at Washington incumbent George W. Bush's foreign policy initiatives towards Iraq: "And fuck going to war. Bush is another number one arsehole."
