It may have been 1960s crooner Paul Anka who flew in to sing his adapted lyrics for Frank Sinatra's My Way to Sidney Kimmel, but it was Elton John who stole the show.
The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, PA, was launched December 14, 2001, in glittering style at a black-tie event for 2,500 patrons contributing $5,000 each.
Opera stars Frederica Von Stade and Denyce Graves, pianist Andre Watts, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, performed the Emmerson Lake Palmer classic Fanfare For the Common Man.
Elton was resplendent in black, with crystals outlining his lapels and the Versace Medussa on the back of the jacket. The glasses were rose-coloured.
