Elton and Bernie Weigh In On Recent Sad Events

A lone gunman unleashed a rapid-fire barrage of bullets from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel late Sunday, killing at least 59 people and injuring more than 500 others attending a country music festival below.

It was the  worst mass shooting in modern history, and Stephen Paddock was "solely responsible for this heinous act," Assistant Clark County Sheriff Todd Fasulo told reporters.

Elton reacted on Instagram, writing that he was ''utterly devastated by the tragedy'' and considers Las Vegas to be like a second home.

''My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of everyone affected by this horrific act. And I continue to pray for a more peaceful and tolerant world.''
On Monday, Tom Petty's manager announced that his client had died. The songwriter was found in critical condition at his home in Malibu on Sunday night after suffering full cardiac arrest. He was taken to the hospital but could not be saved. He was 66 years old.
Elton paid tribute on Instagram, with the following:
''Tom Petty's music and songs are timeless. They sound as relevant now as ever.
'He was a wonderful writer, musician and singer. Irreplaceable and unique.
''This is such a sad, sad day.
''Sending all my love to his loved ones.''
Bernie Taupin also wrote about the musician. On his Web site, the lyricist said he ''was and will always remain the template by which American rock was measured. He was the genuine article, the greatest exponent of the art form in the last four decades.''
