Rocket Man Was Asked to Play Yes!Fest

Written by Chief Editor.

Elton has thrown his support behind a marriage equality music festival to be held in Sydney at the end of the month.

Yes!Fest will feature performances by Jimmy Barnes, Killing Heidi and Client Liaison during the final days of the bruising same-sex marriage campaign. The one-day music festival is a joint initiative between advertising giant M&C Saatchi and Marriage Equality Australia, with all profits going to the Yes campaign and LGBTIQ charities.

The former Reg Dwight was approached to perform at the festival, but had to decline due to touring commitments. However, he has released a video encouraging Australians to attend and vote yes in the government's same-sex marriage survey.

"When you vote yes, it is a vote for freedom," he said. "Every individual needs to have their personal freedom and to live their lives as they see fit. We're not asking for anything that is not given freely to the majority of society. So let's not be an exception here in Australia. Please say yes when your chance to vote arrives. This is, after all, the 21st century."

Festival co-organiser Jonathan Seidler said while it would have been great to have Elton on the lineup, he expected people like Jimmy Barnes to pull massive crowds.

The concert will be held at Sydney's Spotless Stadium on Sunday, October 29.
