The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently visited Elton's home in Nice.
The couple and baby Archie took a private jet to the holiday destination, drawing criticism for the seeming contradiction to their stance on protecting the environment.
However, the musician said he paid for the private plane ride. He also claimed the flight was made carbon neutral. (This typically involves calculating how much your flight generates in greenhouse gas emissions and financially contributing to a project that aims to reduce emissions by that same amount.)
Elton says he's "deeply distressed" over the "distorted and malicious" accounts of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visiting him, and feels the need to protect Harry and his family "from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death."
Elton, who was friends with Princess Diana, Harry's late mother, said that the couple's recent vacation at his home was his way of providing them a peaceful break after a hectic year and their dedication to charity ... but it required a private jet ride for security reasons.
Ellen DeGeneres has also weighed in.
The 61-year-old tweeted the following, alongside a photo of the famous pair:
''My wife Portia and I met Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in England to talk about their work on wildlife conservation.”
Another celebrity who tweeted about the issue is Pink.
The 39-year-old wrote: “I’m happy to see people coming to the defense of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The way people treat her is the most public form of bullying I have seen in a while. It’s out of control. Let’s all be a bit kinder, huh? Let’s show our children that it’s cool to be kind.”
