Rina Sawayama, whose debut album has been praised by Sir Elton, is upset that she's not considered eligible for the Mercury Prize or a Brit Award.
The 29-year-old was born in Japan, but considers herself British. She has permanent residency status in the UK, but doesn't hold a British passport.
The young woman has recently been in contact with the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the organisation behind the BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize, and they are looking into making changes.
Last weekend, Elton congratulated all the nominees for this year's Mercury Prize.
But he took to social media to add: "Unfortunately, not everyone gets to make that list. So I want to shamelessly plug two artists that were overlooked. New music from Rina Sawayama and Westerman are two of my favourite albums of 2020.''
